School Holidays in July

School holidays are a bit different this July. All our programs and activities will be run online.
Activities will be either live, interactive, or prerecorded so that you can participate when it suits you!

Anytime Activities

These activities have been pre-recorded so you can access them when it suits you.
Anytime Activities are available via the RTRL YouTube playlist. Don't forget to share your work!

Create a portable puppet theatre and story 'spark' jar.  
Learn how to make a beautiful hand painted puppet theatre that will travel with you.
This activity will help children understand the basics of storytelling, grow confidence, and imagination.
 

Special Friends of the Koala Storytime

Join the wonderful volunteers from Friends of the Koala, as they read stories, sing, and share their experiences with supporting local koalas.

 

nature weavingNature Weaving
Learn how to make a loom using branches and yarn. Weave in found objects from nature to create a unique and beautiful artwork. Grab a friend and head outdoors to collect items for your woven wonder.

 



Story Dog - Book Suggestions
Story Dog volunteers from around the region are joining us with some special ‘Suggest a Book’ Storytimes.

Make a Walking Map
Learn to tell stories and make maps in this art literature activity.
Make a gorgeous map of memories from a walk, hike, or stroll. A fantastic family holiday activity. 

Monster Bookmarks
Tired of losing your page? Learn how to make a corner bookmark monster - easy and simple, step by step. These bookmarks are super easy to make, look fun and I promise they won’t bite.


Ice Cream Making
Ice cream may be a yummy treat, but there can be a scientific side to it!  We’re making our own ice cream with a few ingredients in zip-lock bags, and LOTS of shaking…but will it work every time?  Join us as we investigate, and hopefully, enjoy a sweet reward!  As we said, ‘There’s a whole lot of shaking going on’, so you might want to enlist the help of a friend or sibling for this one. 
CAUTION -allergy advice- we are using cream, vanilla, sugar, and salt.

Blackout Poetry
Could you be a poet and don’t know it?  Create a new poem from an old book or newspaper! Learn this creative technique, where we black-out words from the pages of old reading material

Paper Making
We’re recycling scrap paper and old newspapers and turning them into fantastic paper-based crafts! Join us as we rip apart the old paper fibres to turn them into something totally new! Get messy with paper mush, get inventive with decorations and even get gardening with your creations! We are making bookmarks, seeded shapes and whatever else you can think of! Give old newspapers, gift wrap or junk mail a whole new lease on life!

Lego Stories Challenge

Are you a Lego Master Builder?
Join our weekly challenge thoughout July and test your skills!
Enter the challenge by sending us a picture on Facebook of what you built and a short story about it.
Some of the amazing creations will be shared at the end of each week on Facebook.
This online activity is suitable for all ages.

Online Pickles & Preserves Workshop with Love Food Hate Waste.

11am & 6pm (Live Event)
This event is in conjunction with North East Waste, with Katie from Byron co-hosting. Bookings required.

Make a pickle, prepare a meal and learn tips on keeping your food fresher for longer...
Join Chef, Danielle Davidson and NE Waste for a 1 hour online workshop on being Food Smart.  Chef Danie will take you through the steps in making your own quick pickle with excess veggies, and whip up a delicious meal using common leftover ingredients. Be inspired to make the most of the food you have, eat better and save money.
This free online workshop is hosted by North East Waste on behalf of it's member Councils, as part of the Love Food Hate Waste program.

Family Trivia

Grab your family, grab your friends and face off online against players from across our region in an all ages Kahoot trivia. 
Kahoot is an online trivia platform which allows participants to compete in trivia hosted by the Library live and online. Sign up for this fun, interactive quizz session. Instructions on how to access Kahoot provided after sign up. You'll need a device connected to the internet to play. Play as an individual or a team. Each player or team will require a device.
Book your spot by emailing lismore@rtrl.nsw.gov.au with 'TRIVIA booking' in the subject line.

Beeswax wrapper workshops

Wednesday, July 15

11am & 2pm (Live Event)
This event is in conjunction with North East Waste. NE Waste are handling bookings through Eventbrite

Beeswax wrappers are a wonderful plastic free alternative to keeping your food fresher for longer. In this workshop you will learn how to make your own beeswax wrapper with our on-line live tutorial, as well as how to use and care for your beeswax wrap.
We will supply a free DIY beeswax making kit to the first 40 participants registered (1 per household) to be collected from an agreed location.
This free online workshop is hosted by North East Waste on behalf of it's member Councils, as part of the Love Food Hate Waste program.

ACTIVITIES IN TWEED AREA

Build your own "Magic Beans" terrarium - Seed Library Activity
Pick up a terrarium kit from one of the Tweed Area branches, or make your own to grow 'magic beans'. This interactive online activity from DiscoveryRoom is suitable for all ages and is a fantastic introduction to growing food for little green fingers.

Static Electricity Experiment Kit
Collect a DiscoveryRoom kit and bring friendly ghosts to life with this fantastic STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) based experiment.
